The Project works closely with the Wilton Centre and Secondary Schools throughout the Borders. We also have contacts with the Youth Offending Service, Social Work Departments and other youth agencies to identify young people who are deemed to be 'at risk ' whether it be at home, school or in the community.

The Wilton Centre, Secondary Schools and other youth based agencies generally refer young people to the Project for group work programmes.  These programmes cater for up to 8 young people and take place on a Wednesday morning once a week for a period of 10 weeks (during term time).

Each programme includes a combination of off-road training sessions, group based activities and discussions relevant to the needs of the group.  The main focus of the programmes are to engage the young people in a positive experience, to encourage them to work with each other effectively, and to identify individual needs/issues within a group setting.

Whilst on the programme the group will work towards personal SMART targets which will then be discussed with the School/agency and support given to help make them achieveable.  Each individual is required to show they are making an effort to work towards their targets in order to be givent he opportunity of off-road bike sessions.  If little or no effort is made during the week then consequences are put in place - either a limited amount of time on the bikes, or no bikes at all for that subsequent session.

Adopting a multi-agency approach is fundamental to the succes of the programme, where all staff involved communciate and provide weekly feedback.  If the young people are supported with their targets during their time on the programme then it is hoped that many of them will have developed positive habits which will encourage them to continue post-programme.
